The Pawn and the Unfaithful is an original character design based from the ideas of The Gothic representing the utilization of images of terror by those in power to instill fear and act as a warning against disobedience. The modern pawn is weighed down by their past counterpart who has now become part of that image of terror. The military inspired double-ended coat is covered in a timeline stretching from medieval Gothic artwork to present day propaganda. This piece stemmed from my own response of trepidation of Gothic art as a child. The costume serves as its own contained form of theatrical performance: non-reliant on a set, other performers, or sound.

The costume consists of a constructed coat and an everyday distressed under layer. The coat is one large garment and is dyed to resemble 20th century military blue. It is adorned in a collage of screen prints, paper adhered with a stiffener technique, foiling, and appliqué. The flattened man is a painted silicone cast created from a custom sculpt.
